Mother's Day is a special day where we have the opportunity to honour our mothers and is celebrated in the UK on Sunday 27th March this year. Whilst we often refer to Mother’s Day as Mothering Sunday, they both have different origins.

The celebration of Mother’s Day dates as far back as the ancient Greeks where they honoured the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses, Rhea. with springtime worship festivals. We know that the Romans also celebrated Cybele, a mother Goddess, every March as far back as 250 BC.

Mothering Sunday dates back to the 16th century and has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent ever since. Both Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday represent the same thing and it's still a day to show our appreciation to our Mums.

The History Of Mothering Sunday

As already mentioned, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, 3 weeks before Easter and began as a religious celebration.  People would give thanks to Mother Mary also known as the Virgin Mary.  These celebrations encouraged people to visit their local area's  main church or cathedral known as their ‘mother’ church.  Christianity became widely acknowledged across Europe in the 16th century and the celebrations ensured that Mothering Sunday was observed as a yearly event.  This became a tradition in the Christian calendar whereby people would return to their mother church as part of a family occasion.  This celebration reunited families and allowed children who worked away from home to spend the day with their family and visit their mother.
