As you might imagine we care passionately about the countryside in which we are blessed to live. This care extends to what we do in our working lives at Devon hampers. We aim to minimise our impact on our environment and to make it better than we found it.
We are lucky enough to be based at Milford farm in the heart of the beautiful countryside of West Devon. From the farm we can see Dartmoor and just 20 miles to the West is the stunning North Atlantic coast.
There are two rivers that run through the farm: the River Thrushell and the River Wolf both of which are beautiful tree lined rivers with a mixture of ripples and pools which are abundant wildlife corridors. There are no fertilisers or pesticides used on the farm and of the 110 acres, 60 are set aside into Woodland and are left alone for nature to flourish.
As far as possible, our products come from within Devon and Cornwall and thus travel very few food miles. We source from small scale artisan producers who care passionately for their products and use the very best of local ingredients. All of our team live locally and travel a short distance to work.
We use cardboard that is recyclable and primarily woodwool also recyclable for our packaging. We are still using some bubble wrap for glass but this is being replaced with compostable bubble wrap.
Here on the farm, the electricity comes from PV on the roof. We have replaced all our lights with modern low energy LED. Our water comes from our own bore hole and we have a septic tank so we make no call on the water companies.
The CEO and owner of the business is also a Trustee of the Westcountry Rivers Trust. This is an environmental charity charged with making our rivers and streams. In practice that really means working on the land as that where the rivers get the water from. The charity has grown and is now 60 people and turning over £3m in activity annually. The rivers running through the farm are in the Rivers Trust passport scheme so that the angling for wild brown trout is accessible to all.
