Pancake Day The Devon Way

It's only one week until Pancake Day, and of course all of us at Devon Hampers are excited to try out some amazing new recipes using our Devon produce. From fresh cream, to honey and even a drop of liqueur the pancake possibilities are endless, so this Pancake Day don't just settle for a sprinkling of sugar, challenge yourself with these four great recipes that will make Shove Tuesday a feast to remember.

The Basics

Before we delve into the world of the Devon pancake it is key to get the basics right by deciding which type of pancake you like best. Depending on your palate, there are two main recipes that will always be a winner and will form the base of your proper Devon pancake. American Pancakes are much more fluffy and smaller than the traditional crepe and are often seen scoffed in any traditional American Dinner.

The typical ingredients for American Pancakes include:

• 140g Plain Flour
• 1tsp Baking Powder
• 2 tbsp Caster Sugar – white preferably but brown works just as well
• 1 Large Egg
• 140ml Milk

Melted butter is then whisked into the batter for an indulgent flavour.

The Traditional Crepe is much simpler to make although they can be a nightmare to flip. This recipe includes:

• 100g Plain Flour
• 2 Eggs
• 300ml Milk
• A drizzle of sunflower oil

Heated on a hot pan these pancakes are wonderful to stuff full of amazing treats. Try not to stack these though as they tend to stick together causing a bit of a mess.

Devon Pancake Recipes

1. The Cream Tea

Tasting just as good on a pancake as on a scone, pancakes and strawberries will seem as though they are made for each other in this dish. Perfect for a Devon inspired Pancake Day, simply spoon on a thick layer of jam and strawberries and top with lashings of clotted cream. A wonderfully indulgent recipe that works well with both types of pancakes.

2. Devon Fudge Delight

Fudge and clotted cream, what could be better? The perfect way to get your sugary sweet fix simply crush your fudge into pieces and sprinkle over your pancakes. The perfect dessert.

3. Chocolate Heaven

Devon chocolate displayed at its finest, simply top your pancakes with Devon Fudge and grate over a little of Willie's Chocolate Venezuelan Gold. As a little extra treat for the adults try adding a little drizzle of Orange Chocolate Liqueur into the batter before frying. Simply perfect for Pancake Day.

4. Strawberry Shortbread

A treat that is packed full of flavour, this Devon pancake recipe can be enjoyed by everyone. Cover your pancakes with layers of Strawberry Jam and crumble on your favourite shortbread. A sweet taste with a little added crunch.
